5.Finishing of the Metal Sculpture

It is important steps to give vividness of artisan dream. It includes 4 processes.

  • Removing metal oxide on the surface

    The statue is covered with metal oxide on the surface .The layer is removed with the help of the sand paper and files. Now surface is sheen completely to start engraving step.

  • Engraving
    The statue is covered with metal oxide on the surface .The layer is removed with the help of the sand paper and files. Now surface is sheen completely to start engraving step.

  • Polishing
    After finishing engraving, it is polished with metal polish and buff machine.
  • Gold plating.

    The statue is ready for gold plating. Amalgam of gold is painted uniformly on statue with copper rod. It is heated to vaporize mercury and thin layer of gold remains on surface. The gold surface is polished with agate stone in uniform direction. The surface is exposed to fire and emerge in water. Then surface is gently rubbed with soft cotton cloth. The statue is ornamented with emerald, ruby, sapphire and mountain crystal. Finally, an artisan's dream comes real as a vivid statue is ready.

    Newari art has their own traditional way of designing the statue that is different from Tibetan style.

    1. The face of statue resembles Mongol Aryan mixture.
    2. The statue is engraved with lotus, endless knot and climber grass.
    3. The face of statue is gold plated in stead of painting
    The statue is ornamented with emerald, ruby, sapphire and mountain crystal.

Over 100 years.....
In Min Nath Temple yard opposite to Machhendra Nath Temple, a huge pair of brass made lion guards is roaring for 100 years with goddess Tara sitting on them. These lions have unique art at Patan. They are established by my late grand father Hira Man Shakya on auspicious 5 th birth day of his son Singh Raj Shakya. Later the son was died of diarrhoea.  (Craft owner)

Pashmina is the softest natural fibre obtained from, the neck & underbelly of the rare species of the capra hircus mountain goat. These goats live at 4000m to 4500m altitude and can not be reared elsewhere. Pashmina fibre is 14 to16 microns thick this means it is about one sixth of a human hair. More Inside
